Curriculum Units
These units were developed co-teaching with classroom teachers that fit their students and context. You need to ADAPT these units!!! In the long run, the goal is for you to craft the problems, the number strings, etc. that directly build upon the contexts that are culturally relevant and mathematically targeted to your students. If you are having a hard time getting started, these units serve as a model - as a vision for what a student-centered, problem-solving based unit can look like. You need to alter the names of the students, the stores, the contexts to be relevant to your own students and classroom. Change the numbers to be "just right" or "challenging" based on the developmental range of your students. Think, however, of the number relationships which are already present and select new combinations that seek to have the students navigate the number system in a similar manner.
Note that these lessons are in various draft stages. Some formatting is off as they have been uploaded to Google Drive. Some layouts are older than others. I am slowly revising units as time allows. Do not expect perfection. Use your professional judgment based on the research of how students learn their mathematical ideas. Contact me if you have questions or insights: [email protected]. Your feedback on how the lessons work (or not) and impact student understanding is encouraged.
